A bumper crop of sunflower is expected, with an average yield ofat least 1,900 kg/ha for the country, BTA learnt from AlexanderPiskov, Head of the Sunflower Plant Breeding Section at theDobroudja Agricultural Institute.
He described as "speculative"the rise of cooking oil prices, considering the prospects of a bountiful harvest.
Piskov recalled that the average yield has topped 2,000 kg/ha only once over the last 15 years, and argued that the oilseed production expected this autumn will certainly meet domestic demand.
As much as 640,000 ha have been put under sunflower countrywide, with Dobrich Region having the largest fields (90,000 ha), the plant breeder said.
The sunflower plants are in a very good condition after recent rains.Large-scale harvesting of sunflower will start after September 10.
In Silistra Region (Northeastern Bulgaria), the average yield at the start of the sunflower harvest stands at 2,600 kg/ha, 600 kg up from the average yield reached last year, the Regional Agriculture Directorate said.
