Croatian Police Spokesperson Jelena Bikic said on Sunday that 52 of the 65 captured rioters were detained, and that 32 of the injured individuals are policemen, while the remaining 18 are rioters.
A day after the clash between a group of protesters and the police in the Zagreb downtown, the Croatian police released the latest report on the number of people arrested and those wounded in the incident on Saturday, and Croatian President Ivo Josipovic stated that the group of rowdies offended Zagreb by their savagery.
According to the latest police data, 50 persons were injured in the riots and 65 rioters were taken in for questioning.
Croatian Police Spokesperson Jelena Bikic said on Sunday that 52 of the 65 captured rioters were detained, and that 32 of the injured individuals are policemen, while the remaining 18 are rioters.
According to Bikic, two police vehicles were smashed in the clashes, a number of buildings were damaged and many windows on shops and apartments were broken. She added that the youngest rioter the police captured was 15 years old.
She said that she cannot comment on the claims that opposition parties participated in the funding of the Saturday riots because the police have not yet established that.
Bikic reminded that Croatian veterans staged a peaceful protest at the Ban Jelacic's Square on Saturday which gathered around 15.000 people, while a group of several hundred protesters clashed with the police, throwing stones, chairs, bins and other objects at officers.
Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said that rioters who caused the Saturday incident have offended Zagreb by their barbarity and that the police reacted adequately and professionally.
According to Josipovic, the rioters who clashed with the police had nothing to do with veteran protesters and had come to the downtown with the aim to cause riots.
He also said that everyone working in the field of politics, especially the government, needs to hear out certain messages voiced at the veterans' protest. However, Josipovic pointed out that he personally would not agree with some messages that could also be heard at the protest, such as those about expelling the Serb minority from Vukovar and similar.
Josipovic reiterated that he had done all that was in his power in order to help the Purda case be closed in the right way and added that results should follow soon.
