FM Milososki: "Macedonia ready to confront Greece before ICJ"

Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Milososki said that in its application, Macedonia requests ICJ to determine that Greece at the NATO summit in Bucharest in April 2008 breached Article 11 from the Interim Accord, i.e. it objected the NATO membership invitation for Macedonia, even though it would be referred to by the interim reference. The Court is requested to bind Greece to immediately make all the necessary steps in order to respect its obligations under Article 11.

The Republic of Macedonia is well-prepared for a public hearing, which is to be held this Monday before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague in relation to a lawsuit against the Republic of Greece for breaching the Interim Accord signed by the countries in 1995.

Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Milososki at a press briefing on Thursday said that in its application, Macedonia requests ICJ to determine that Greece at the NATO summit in Bucharest in April 2008 breached Article 11 from the Interim Accord, i.e. it objected the NATO membership invitation for Macedonia, even though it would be referred to by the interim reference. The Court is requested to bind Greece to immediately make all the necessary steps in order to respect its obligations under Article 11.

The head of country's diplomacy, who will lead the Macedonian delegation to Monday's hearing, said the proceedings do not refer to the political name dispute between Macedonia and Greece and the Court will not settle the countries' differences involving the name. He noted that ICJ proceedings and negotiations aiming at overcoming the differences involving the name are two separate and different processes. "It is not expected the verdict to affect the negotiation stances of Macedonia regarding the name and the country with and without this lawsuit will continue with a political dialogue in order the name row to be closed, because the only way to settle the issue is through the UN-brokered talks."

"It is an international and legal dispute in which Greece is the focus of the lawsuit, not NATO and it refers to Greece's treatment prior to and during the Bucharest Summit," Milososki elaborated.

"We would respect the verdict, whatever it is going to be, but we would not prejudice before it is pronounced. The most important thing is to present Macedonia's arguments and facts before the Court, which are to lay grounds for a just decision to be reached," FM Milososki said.

He added that both parties in the dispute have agreed oral arguments to be presented at a hearing, which will be open for the public. Macedonia, Milososki said, has requested during the proceedings the Republic of Macedonia to be addressed by its temporary reference in full, instead by its acronym, which is in line with Resolution 817 of the UN Security Council.

The court deliberating the Macedonian lawsuit is comprised of 15 judges from all over the world, except from Macedonia and Greece. Both parties in the dispute have appointed one ad hoc judge each. Macedonia is going to be represented by a judge from Croatia, Budislav Vukas. "The choice was made taking into consideration his collaboration with the faculty of law in Skopje, excellent recommendations and solid reputation," stated Milososki.

Asked whether Greece will respect the ICJ decision, the minister said that the Court's verdicts were final and binding for UN members, i.e for parties involved in the dispute.

Macedonia as arguments amongst other things will present all statements and texts published in the press that are deemed useful and valuable.

ICJ will deliberate the appeal after the second stage of the process of oral arguments is completed, i.e. after March 30. The verdict is expected to be reached prior to or after the summer holidays, in the fall at the latest. During this period, the Court will monitor actions taken by both countries, which is why a briefing was held recently with representatives of all relevant Macedonian political parties, who have confirmed that their actions will be rational and sensible.

The public hearing in the Hague-based court will be held between March 21-30. According to a schedule posted on its website, the hearing will consist two rounds. In the first round, Macedonia will present its oral arguments on March 21 and 22, while Greece will present its counter-arguments on March 24-25. In the second round of oral arguments, on March 28 the team representing Macedonia will have the chance to respond orally to Greece's defence. The public hearing will end on March 30, when Greece is to present its closing arguments.

Macedonia filed its application before the International Court of Justice against Greece in November 2008, which was followed by two detailed written memorandums from 20 July 2009 and 9 June 2010.

I am surprised that everyone comments about ancient Macedonia and ancient Greece. Let's leave that to the historians.

No one can deny the right of today's Macedonians to call themselves Macedonian. It's a human right that they can choose their nationality. It's the only name that they have got.

Me Greek, me very cultured, we Greeks have 3000 years of continuous unbroken culture, my people invent everything democracy, language, mathematics even cheese and coffee (greek style).

Greek people best business people in the world. You laugh maybe? But think about it! Europe gives my Greek people money every year for nothing (2009 EU subsidies to Greece=Euro 40,000,000,000), we waste this very easy, no problem! From this we learn that money is very cheap, so my Greek people go crazy on the Visa (Greek foreign debt = Euro 400,000,000,000) and do you believe our EU brothers can't pay off our debt quick enough.

Now I tell you, people from FYROM are Slav, bad people, they not intelligent like Greek people, they steal Greek history and our land. They come to Macedonia in 600 AD, 800 years after Alexander Megali and now after only 1600 years of living our soil they think they are Macedonian, because Tito and Stalin brain washed them all.

I hope my Greek Government keeps these slavo-skopian-fyromian-commi peasants out of NATO and EU for ever. Who needs them anyway in our glorious EU, they would be like hungry pigs in our god given EU subsidy trough.

It seems to me cleary that after reading many post many claiming that Macedonia is slavic purely lack's sufficient evidence in order to provide an objective arguement. First of all let me start by pointing out a few missleading arguments often made by Slavic or shall we name them FYROM. Any argument that is made by a Slavic contain half truth in order to construct what they claim "to be" a clear and logical argument. However such arguments are unsustainable, lack professionalism, and false. As an example many mention that, Greece became an independent state in 1830 and furthermore claim that up until 1915, Greece gain terrirories in the north preceisly up to 50% where ancient macedonia use to be, however, what they fail to mention is the continuation of greeks present throughout history up until today (including greek being slaved 400 years by the ottoman empire). In addition history is often fabricated and propaganda is ofthen incorperated towards every Slavic person in order to believe that they decent from ancient Macedonia. This is false the Macedonian empire came into an end once Alexander the Great had died - most of the empire was then divided among his generals who often killed each other. In addition, Macedonians were decendent from the doric tribe the same tribe that composed the Spartans. Furthermore, Macedonians wrote in Hellenic, sope Hellenic (with a variation in dialect), and believed in the ancient Gods just like any other Hellenes. Finaly we all know that slavics came to the northen part of Macedonia about six centuries after the death of Alexander the Great. Dont take my word for it just visit one of the excavations in northen Greece but beware Slavic's you might be shocked to find out that your actualy not a Macedonian and that your goverment foolled you once again!!!

The following comment by"ime"on March 19th"How can Skopja claim to be a country when in fact they do not recognise Greece as a country nor its borders"
My dear fellow, are you in space?.Republic of Macedonia refers to Greece as the Republic of Greece. It is Greece who do not recognise the Republic of Macedonia.
In the 1995 Interim Agreement the Republic of Macedonia recognised the borders. It was Greece who colloborated with Milosovic to attack and partition the Republic of Macedonia, only Greece backed off.

The Macedonians do not speak Croatian,Slovenian or Serbian.
Dont you know,in 1925 Greece recognised the Macedonian identity, culture and language?Serbia and Bulgaria opposed Greece on this issue, and Bulgaria was going to go to war with Greece.Do you know what Dendramis said to his counterparts?"The Macedonian language is neither Serbian nor Bulgarian, but an independent Macedonian language".This is the time Greece printed the Abecedar for the Macedonian school children in the Macedonian language.

Alexander the Great was not Greek, get it through your nerow minded head.
Do you understand what Isocrates wrote to Philip in 337?.Do you understand the epitaph written by Demosthenes about the fallen Hellens at Chaeronea?.If you have any kind of education, youll know what I am talking about.
The language spoken in the Republic of Macedonia is spoken in Greek occupied Macedonia,Bulgarian and Albanian occupied Macedonia. We have same identity, culture and language.
It shows, how far you Greeks will go in your historical fabrications.Even uneducated persons as yourself can make an uneducated comments as bellow.

The truth is Macedonians are not "Slavs", they are Macedonians. They speak the Macedonian language practice Macedonian traditions, have their own folklore and enjoy their own Macedonian music. Unlike the Greeks who have an imposed language, the Macedonian language is the mother tongue of the Macedonian people which has been with them for at least 75 generations. The Greek language, on the other hand, was imposed on the Greek people after Greece became a nation state for the first time in 1829.
The reason Greeks call Macedonians "Slav" is because in their minds "Slavs" are apparently an unworthy species of human that does not deserve to grace Macedonian lands or have any human rights. This goes back to the "Aryan" haydays when it was popular to abuse people for various reasons, reminiscent of what the Nazis did to the Jews. Even though this type of practice is no longer popular and most of its practitioners fell off the "Aryan" bandwagon a long time ago...
