The value of Romania's agri-food exports to EU member states and states outside this area continues to surge, by posting an advance of over 68 percent in the first 7 months of 2011 up to 1.736 billion euros, compared with the same period of 2010, according to data the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) sent to Agerpres.
In the first 7 months of 2010, agri-food exports worth 1.033 billion euros have been exported. Although the quantities of products exported by the end of July 2011 were lower than those of the same period of 2010, namely 2.93 million tons in 2011 compared with 3.33 million in 2010, the export revenues have sharply increased as the prices of the agri-food products recorded major hikes on the global market, against the level of 2010.
In addition, in the first 7 months, the imports edged up 35 percent, amounting to 2.467 billion euros, compared with 1.821 billion euros at end-July 2010.
The increase of exports led to Romania's deficit decline in agri-food product trade, dropping by 7.23 percent in the first 7 months of 2011 down to 731.2 million euros. In the same period of 2010, Romania's deficit totalled 788.2 million euros.
According to the MADR figures, the cigarettes, the cigars and tobacco products topped the export revenues on the intra-and extra-EU markets, standing at 265.54 million euros for a quantity of 5,877 tons. Moreover, the corn export brought revenues of 230.065 million euros for 759,152 tons in the first 7 months and the exports of sunflower seeds amounted to 189.69 million euros for a quantity of 373,823 tons.
Regarding the imports, the beet sugar and the cane sugar ranked first with a quantity of 271,298 tons worth 154.53 million euros, followed by fresh, refrozen or frozen pork meat worth 140.83 million euros, for 90,161 tons and sunflower seeds, about 182,705 imported tons with a value of 109.07 million euros.
