A court in Thrace, northern Greece, on Wednesday handed down suspended six-month jail sentences to the two monks at the center of a land swap between the Church and the state and to a former judge with whom they are alleged to have colluded.

The court convicted Maria Psalti, a former judge in the area in northern Greece where the tracts of land involved in the swap are located, of violation of duty.

Ephraim, the former chief monk of the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, and Arsenios, the monastery’s ex-financial manager, received the same sentences for being moral accomplices.
