On Tuesday, May 29, Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry formally asked Salah Sukkar, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Syria, to leave in the wake of the recent massacre of civilians in the Syrian town of Houla.
Syrian Charge d'Affaires in Sofia has left Bulgaria on a late Friday evening flight after been officially requested to give up on the post.
On Tuesday, May 29, Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry formally asked Salah Sukkar, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Syria, to leave in the wake of the recent massacre of civilians in the Syrian town of Houla.
Sukkar's supporters gathered together to send him away and say farewell with the waiving of flags and a car procession. The makeshift convoy was guarded by Bulgarian police over fears of clashes with followers of the Syrian opposition. The opponents of Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, however, failed to show up.
Sukkar has declined any comments.
A number of other countries, among them the US, the UK, Australia, Germany and others, also asked the respective Syrian Ambassadors to leave.
Following Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov's instructions, Deputy Foreign Minister Ivan Naydenov met on Monday, May 28, with Salah Sukkar to protest the killings of more than 108 Syrian civilians, including 49 children, in the town of Houla and the escalation of violence over the last few days.
At the same time, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry decided to pull out its diplomatic staff from the Syrian capital and is terminating temporarily its diplomatic activity there.
Representatives of three Syrian opposition movements met Monday and Tuesday in the Bulgarian town of Pravets near Sofia to discuss developments in their homeland.
The meeting, coordinated and facilitated by the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adopted a declaration on the recent bloodshed in Houla and other cities in Syria.
The declaration called on the UN Security Council and the international community to immediately intervene in support of the Syrian citizens against what opposition representatives see as criminal actions by President Bashar Al-Assad.
For more than a year, Assad's regime in Syria has been faced with civil unrest as part of the so called Arab Spring revolutions.
