Serbia's first environment-friendly base station which will be fueled by solar and wind energy was put into operation on Wednesday in Plocica in the municipality of Kovin, Vojvodina, as a part of the network of the telecommunications company Telenor, the company stated in a release, reports ANSAmed news agency.

This environment-friendly base station is the first pilot project in a series of Telenor's green investments in the field of telecommunication network power supplies, and is the result of cooperation between Serbian experts, who designed a hybrid plant running on solar and wind energy, and contractors, who assembled the complex equipment.

By using renewable energy sources for network power supply, the base station will save up to 50% of electric energy.

It was put into operation by Serbian Minister of Environment Oliver Dulic and Executive Director of Telenor in Serbia Chel-Morten Jonsen, the release reads. Solar panels, wind turbines and a special battery cooling system render the station highly efficient in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and increasing energy savings.

The batteries are installed in a floor shaft in the, keeping the room temperature low and accelerating the cooling process.
