Two weeks ahead of the debate on Serbia's resolution on Kosovo, EU members are holding diplomatic consultations at the UN General Assembly, officials with the UK Mission to the UN told Tanjug.

Two weeks ahead of the debate on Serbia's resolution on Kosovo, EU members are holding diplomatic consultations at the UN General Assembly, officials with the UK Mission to the UN told Tanjug.

Apart from this vague statement, no further information was available in the diplomatic circles at the UN Headquarters on the East River, not even a clarification as to whether the EU members are only discussing a united stance on Serbia's resolution or working on a resolution of their own.

The same source noted that no one besides Belgrade has submitted a draft resolution in connection to the ICJ ruling.

Belgrade daily Blic writes that the U.S. is preparing its own resolution prompted by the ICJ opinion, which will call for talks between Belgrade and Pristina and assert that Kosovo's status cannot be changed.

Diplomats in New York remind that consultations are a common practice which ensures a proposal gets the support of as many states as possible.

The diplomats have until Sept 9, when Serbia's resolution will be on the agenda of the UN General Assembly.

In the meantime, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle will visit Belgrade, and Serbian media are speculating that he will bring a "final offer" from the EU, specifically the five major powers the U.S., Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy, in the form of speedier EU integration in exchange for a softer resolution on Kosovo.

German diplomats in the UN confirmed that they were trying to find an approach different to the one proposed by Serbia. UN German mission media representative Alexander Eberl told Tanjug discussions were being held on the best possible approach to the ICJ’s opinion of counsel, announced on July 22. He said their had been in contact with their Serbian colleagues.
