Kosovo citizens welcomed 2011 with an extremely expensive consumption basket, with prices of basic food products rising between 30-50 percent.

Kosovo will be hit by an even larger economic crisis this year, say economists in Pristina, stating the price hike during the New Year's holidays as an indicator.

Kosovo citizens welcomed 2011 with an extremely expensive consumption basket, with prices of basic food products rising between 30-50 percent.

According to consumers, if the food basket cost EUR 50 by the end of 2010, it now stands at EUR 80, report Pristina media.

Economist Musa Limani says Kosovo is in deep economic and social crisis, lacking economic development and salary increase. On the other hand, prices are rising, whereas people are faced with a number of social problems and poverty.

"Citizens will face many challenges this year, one of which being to put bread on the table", stresses Limani
