Tourist visits up 12 percent January-March 2011

Serbia recorded a total of 356,722 tourist visits from January to March this year, which is 12 percent more than in the same period last year, the National Tourism Organization of Serbia announced Friday quoting the national statistical office.

Serbian citizens accounted for 237,892 or 67 percent of the said total, while foreign visitors numbered 118,830, which is an 11 percent increase.

The tourists spent 1.26 million nights, which is 18 percent more than in the first three months of 2010. Serbian tourists spent 989,146 nights, or 20 percent more than last year. This accounts for 78 percent of the total. Foreign tourists spent 270,960 nights, which is a 12 percent increase.

In terms of overnight stays, Serbian tourists preferred mountain resorts (44 percent) and spas (31 percent). Foreign tourists mostly visited Belgrade (53 percent), while other tourist destinations accounted for 16 percent of overnights.

Montenegrin tourists recorded the most overnights, 29,430, which is 15 percent more than the January-March 2010 period. They were followed by tourists from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Russia and Macedonia.
