Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday formally opened the country's embassy to Serbia, in the presence of representatives of the governments of two countries, diplomatic corps and religious communities.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Aliyev said that the day would be remembered by the people of the two countries, as a number of agreements on cooperation in various fields had been signed during his visit to Serbia.
He added the people would also remember the day by the opening of the renewed Tasmajdan Park, where monuments had been set up in honor of an Azerbaijani former president Heydar Aliyev and Serbian writer Milorad Pavic.
He said that the events were an incentive for future cooperation, adding that he expected the relations between the two countries would continue to develop successfully in the future.
We support each other through international institutions and we will continue to work in that direction, said Aliyev. The Azerbaijani president said that possibilities for cooperation in energy had also been discussed during the day, adding that there had been no conflicting opinions in that respect. He expressed confidence that the Azerbaijani Embassy in Belgrade would work hard and achieve significant results.
Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic thanked President Aliyev and representatives of the Azerbaijani government on the historic visit, adding that Serbia can count on Azerbaijan's unreserved support. The situation where the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries is endangered brought us closer together, said Jeremic, adding that the relations characterized by mutual diplomatic support created a multi-dimensional friendship.
He said that today, Azerbaijan and Serbia are building comprehensive relations in culture, science, engineering and other areas, and stressed that Azerbaijan's Embassy to Serbia and Serbia's in Baku would provide better opportunities and capacities for mutual cooperation and support. Jeremic expressed satisfaction with having been given the responsibility to be the co-chair of the Joint Committee of Serbia and Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani Ambassador Eldar Hasanov thanked for the attention and care received, as well as for Serbia's decision to give a building in Belgrade's municipality of Rakovica to be used for the Embassy of Azerbaijan.
Wife of late writer Milorad Pavic, Jasmina Mihajlovic, presented President Aliyev with a facsimile of the manuscript of Pavic's novel Dictionary of the Khazars.
The grand opening of the embassy was attended by Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic, Vicar Bishop Atanasije of Hvosno, Mufti of the Islamic Community of Serbia Muhamed Jusufspahic, U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick and President of the Serbian Progressive Party Tomislav Nikolic.
