The Kosovo government on Jan. 11 said that the agreement on freedom of movement, which has been in effect since Dec. 26, 2011, was mainly being implemented well, despite the problems that have been overcome through the engagement of the European Union mediator in talks on technical issues.

The Kosovo government statement underlines that according to a Kosovo Police report, 2,949 persons and 899 automobiles entered Kosovo from Dec. 26, 2011, to Jan. 9, 2012.

Under the agreement, for the first time since June 1999, citizens with Kosovo personal identification documents can enter Serbia or use the territory of Serbia to transit to another country.

"The agreement is based on reciprocity and engagement in facilitating freedom of movement according to EU standards. Citizens can cross the border with only a personal ID card alongside one accompanying document which is issued on entering the other country by the border authorities," reads the statement.
