A state of emergency is still in effect in some 14 municipalities in Serbia after heavy snow, Emergency Situations Sector head Predrag Maric said on Jan. 29.

Maric told BETA that motorways and regional roads had been cleared, and that roads leading to villages and those in the mountains were being cleared.

"Yesterday we had ten rescue and assistance operations, and transported the sick from cut-off villages to medical centers and distributed food," said Maric, stressing that people should call 93 for help.

Maric said the situation was the most serious in Ivanjica, Sjenica, Crna Trava, Nova Varos, Brus, Ljubovija, Krupanj and Mali Zvornik. He went on to say that, on Jan. 28, 13 people were evacuated from Mt Divcibare, where they were snowed in their vacation homes.

Power outages in villages in the mountains caused by snow are another problem, Maric stressed.
