Member of the main board of the Democratic Party (DS) Ivan Vujacic has said that, in accordance with statutory deadlines, new presidential elections should be held the following winter, when the president fulfills his entire term, just as the government will fulfill its own mandate.

Member of the main board of the Democratic Party (DS) Ivan Vujacic has said that, in accordance with statutory deadlines, new presidential elections should be held the following winter, when the president fulfills his entire term, just as the government will fulfill its own mandate.

"The only way to call the presidential elections now is that the president resigns with some sort of explanation. Is 'we are saving money' a sufficient excuse? Perhaps so, but if we are already praising the stability of the political system and the government that has managed to stay where it is the whole mandate, then the president should also fulfill his entire term and the presidential elections should be called next winter, to avoid creating a sort of an emergency situation just for opportune reasons," Vujacic said for Saturday's edition of Blic, a Belgrade-based daily, ahead of the session of the DS main board on the same day.

Nevrtheless, he rejected the arguments that the whole year would be lost in the elections.

"The government would work normally and would be able to make important decisions with the help of the president, who is serving his regular term," Vujacic pointed out.
