Six world powers held on Monday their first talks with Iran after more than a year, hoping the meeting will lead to new negotiations on nuclear program of the country, for which the West believes to be aimed at atomic bombs production.

On the eve of the meeting in Geneva, Iran announced that it made a great step forward in its nuclear work, pointing out it will not give up its long battle over peaceful projects for energy production.

The six powers – Great Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States do not expect a major breakthrough during the two-day talks, but diplomats assess that an agreement to meet again, for example early next year, would be a sign of progress.

The talks have just begun, said one of the western officials soon after the main Iranian negotiator Saeed Jalili and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton who is leading the talks on behalf of the six powers arrived to conference center.

Western powers want Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activity, which can serve as fuel for nuclear power reactors, or as bomb material, Reuters reminds.

An European official stated that the six powers expect Iran to shed light on some issues regarding its nuclear program which had so far remained without answer.
