Turkey's first national earth observation satellite, RASAT, has been launched to the space successfully, as Anatolia news agency reports.

Turkey's first national earth observation satellite, RASAT, has been launched to the space successfully, as Anatolia news agency reports.

Designed and manufactured by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey - Space Technologies Research Institute (TUBITAK-UZAY), the satellite was launched to space from the Yasny Base of Russia at the Kazakh border by the Dnepr space launch vehicle.

The vehicle also carried six more satellites from Nigeria, Ukraine, Italy and the USA.

RASAT sent first signals to the TUBITAK station in Ankara after being placed in orbit 687 kilometers away from earth 969 seconds after its launch. RASAT spacecraft has a total mass of 100 kg and a design life of three years.

The satellite images provided by RASAT will also be used in urban and regional planning, forestry, agriculture, disaster monitoring and for other similar purposes. (ANSAmed).
