Albania: EU envoy visits Tirana, meets with Topi, Berisha and Rama

The European Union (EU) envoy, Miroslav Lajcak, visited Tirana for the second time on Thursday to lower the political tensions that followed January 21. Through a very busy agenda, the European diplomat comes with a strong message for the Albanian political leaders, Berisha and Rama.

The European Union (EU) envoy, Miroslav Lajcak, visited Tirana for the second time on Thursday to lower the political tensions that followed January 21. Through a very busy agenda, the European diplomat comes with a strong message for the Albanian political leaders, Berisha and Rama.

After spending nearly one hour in the office of the head of the country, near 15:00 Miroslav Lajcak had a meeting with Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

During the meeting with the head of the country, the Executive Director of Foreign Affairs, Miroslav Lajcak expressed his great concern over the political crisis in Albania and over the fact that this is damaging its international image, by noting that this situation is delaying Albania’s membership in the EU.

Lajcak emphasized the urgent need for peace and public order, and of course, for respect toward the Constitution and institutions’ independence. At this point, both Topi and Lajcak emphasized the importance of “carrying a thorough, professional, transparent and impartial investigation of January 21 events.”

Part of the EU mediator’s agenda for solving the political crisis in Albania was a meeting with Chairman of the Socialist Party (SP), Edi Rama.

The meeting was held at the SP headquarters near 16:30. Former Slovak Foreign Minister comes in Tirana for the second time during this week with the special request of the head of the European diplomacy, Catherine Ashton. Lajcak aim is to repeat Brussels’ message to the Albanian politicians.
