Leaders of the two largest parties of Albanians in Macedonia, Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) and Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA), Ali Ahmeti and Menduh Thaci respectively, signed Wednesday an Election Pact in light of the June 5 snap elections, committing to free, fair and democratic elections.

The Election Pact is initiated by Albanian Ambassador to Macedonia, Arben Cejku, and supported by U.S. Ambassador Philip Reeker and EU Ambassador Peter Sorensen.

The two parties will engage in holding free, fair and honest elections, guaranteeing the citizens' political will.

"Each citizen with the right to vote should take part in the elections, whereas hate speech, insults and provocations should be avoided. The election result must be accepted", reads the agreement that Ahmeti and Thaci signed, urging all parties to do the same.

Ahmeti said the image of a nation, state and political party depended from the holding of fair and democratic elections, whereas Thaci stressed the agreement should be a model for all citizens.

U.S. and EU Ambassadors, Reeker and Sorensen respectively, assessed the document signing as a positive step towards fair and democratic elections.

"They demonstrated leadership, which is important for democracy, so that the country can move forward. We believe the two leaders have realized that fair and democratic elections are the country's future, putting behind their political differences in order to unite for the elections", said Reeker.

According to Sorensen, the agreement represented a commitment, "which we support and hope that other election participants will join".
