The detention sentence imposed on wartime mayor of Trebinje Bozidar Vucurevic was terminated on Friday, and he was released pending trial after being held in custody for two and a half months, waiting for the proceedings to start on grounds of the extradition requests filed by Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH).
The competent investigative judge imposed a ban on Vucurevic leaving the territory of Serbia and ordered him to report to the court twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, the court released.
The court has not decided on Croatia's and BiH extradition requests yet because the competent investigative judge called on the two countries on May 26 to file necessary documentation, which has not arrived yet.
Both countries were given a 30-day deadline to file the documentation, the release states.
In mid-May, the Belgrade Appellate Court annulled the decision of the Sabac District Court regarding the extradition and detention extension for the wartime mayor of Trebinje because it established that it does not have the competence to make such a decision, and transferred the authority concerning the two extradition requests to the War Crimes Department of the Belgrade District Court as the only competent body in this case.
Vucurevic was then transferred from the Sabac Prison to the Belgrade District Prison, from which he was released on Friday.
After the Belgrade District Court issues its decision regarding the two extradition requests, Serbian Justice Minister Snezana Malovic would have the final word in the case.
Vucurevic was arrested at Karakaj border crossing in Mali Zvornik on April 4, on a warrant issued by Croatia for war crimes committed during the artillery attack on Dubrovnik. Croatia's request for Vucurevic's extradition arrived a week after his arrest.
The BiH Justice Ministry also requested Vucurevic's extradition because it is conducting an investigation against him for war crimes committed in Trebinje.
Vucurevic holds BiH citizenship, but he also applied for Serbian citizenship to the Serbian Consulate in BiH back in 2008. However, his citizenship application was refused and he could now be extradited to BiH or Croatia in keeping with provisions of the European Extradition Convention.
