A 10-meter long whale was spotted Thursday 150 meters off the shore at the Costabella Hotel complex in Rijeka, Croatian media reported Friday.

The large mammal was photographed by a local around 8:30 a.m. from the terrace of his home, Rijeka daily Novi List reported.

Experts at the Blue World Institute for Sea Research believe the animal is most likely a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), which lives in the Mediterranean Sea and is often spotted in the southern and middle Adriatic Sea, but rarely this far north.

Before this sighting, a fin while was last found in Baski Bay in 2002, where it died, according to Blue World.
