Croatia's former prime minister Ivo Sanader, who is accused of abuse of office and corruption, was extradited to Croatia on Monday evening, after several months in extradition custody in Salzburg, Austria.

Sanader was brought to Croatia's Remetinec prison under heavy police escort, which closed off the whole area. Several hundred people observed his arrival.

The extradition was planned and executed in secret, but there was a lot of unofficial information in the media.

Croatia issued a warrant for Sanader's arrest December 9, 2010. He was arrested in Austria a day later and transported to Salzburg to be put in detention.

Sanader and former deputy prime minister Damir Polancec are suspected of receiving EUR 10 million from MOL, a Hungarian oil and gas company, to grant the company control over Croatia's petroleum company INA that was disproportionate to MOL's share in the capital.
