Romanian president Traian Basescu asked the opposition to accept changes to the Constitution pledging to step down afterwards.

Romanian president Traian Basescu asked the opposition to accept changes to the Constitution pledging to step down afterwards.

In a letter sent last night to opposition leaders, Basescu urged them to take part in debates related to amending the Constitution under which the presidential term will be cut down to four hears. He promised to resign in order new presidential elections to be held in November, media in Romania reported.

Under the Romanian Constitution, Basescu's term lasts up to 2014, however the current president in the letter said he would submit a resignation on time for the presidential elections to be held at the same time as the parliamentary polls as soon as this year.
