Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu said on Feb. 17 that, over the course of two years of independence, Kosovo has proven to the world that the solution has brought more peace and stability in the region.
Addressing MPs at a ceremonial parliament session marking the second anniversary of the declaration of independence, Sejdiu said that through good neighborly cooperation Kosovo has proven to be not only an important factor of peace, but also a catalyst of good relations between countries in the region.
"Fortunately, our policy of good neighborly relations has been met with full understanding by neighboring countries and we now have excellent relations with Albania, Macedonia and Montenegro, as well as with Croatia, Slovenia and Bulgaria. Although Greece has not officially recognized our independence yet, we have intense cooperation with that country as well," the president said.
Sejdiu went on to say that the only problem in neighborly relations remains Serbia, which continue to lead an aggressive anti-Kosovo policy.
"The Belgrade authorities are financing parallel Serb structures in the north of the country, where a high degree of illegal trade and crime is still present," said Sejdiu and emphasized the importance of a strategy for integrating northern Kosovo into Pristina institutions.
According to him, 65 states have recognized Kosovo so far, while Pristina has opened 21 embassies and 10 consular offices worldwide and has begun building a solid diplomatic service.
