The Belgrade Faculty of Law and UNHCR signed a Memorandum of understanding on Thursday and thus officially founded the Legal clinic for combating human trafficking.
At the Faculty's courtroom, the memorandum was signed by Dean of the Faculty of Law Mirko Vasiljevic and Jun Shirato of the UNHCR Representative Office.
Vasiljevic expressed hope that the newly-established clinic would have a long tradition and provide experts in the area of fight against human trafficking, which would contribute to even more efficient tackling of the issue.
This is an important matter Serbia needs to solve before joining the EU and this is why it is crucial to educate adequate profiles, which also shows that we are successfully striving to meet European standards, the dean said.
Shirato assessed that the foundation of the legal clinic is important for the training of future judges, prosecutors and lawyers and announced that similar clinics would be opened in Nis and Novi Sad.
According to Shirato, the clinic's main aim is to protect victims of human trafficking, but also to serve as a deterrent and facilitate the process of setting up the system of criminal responsibility.
The signing ceremony was attended by students of the Faculty of Law and the legal clinic, the Faculty's professors and associates who will take part in the clinic's work, as well as by high UN commissioner for refugees, International Organisation for Migration and UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
By opening its sixth legal clinic, the Faculty of Law has joined the process of providing free legal assistance to those who do not have the financial means to ask for legal advice, as in keeping with the adoption of the new law on provision of free legal assistance.
The clinic's aim is to help raise awareness and capacities of future lawyers with regard to the fight against human trafficking and to provide support to the implementation of the National Action Plan for prevention of human trafficking which the government adopted in 2009.
The project is being implemented under the auspices of the Global initiative to Fight Human Trafficking.
