Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Serbia Vincent Degert announced Thursday that the visa liberalization for Serbia could be temporarily suspended if the influx of false asylum seekers from that country to the EU continued.

Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Serbia Vincent Degert announced Thursday that the visa liberalization for Serbia could be temporarily suspended if the influx of false asylum seekers from that country to the EU continued.

We have just begun considering the possibility, which requires an agreement between the member states both at the level of the European Commission and in the European Parliament, Degert told a news conference after the opening of a European friendship park in Svilajnac (central Serbia) on the occasion of Europe Day, May 5.

He pointed out that EU countries were under a lot of pressure in the form of arrivals of the so-called illegal, or false asylum seekers from Southeast Europe.

Countries such as Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg are under great pressure, said Degert. This is a serious problem for them and we need to show that there is a negative trend present and that the number of asylum seekers should be reduced instead of showing a steady growth, he explained.

Degert added he hoped an agreement would be reached and a solution found to prevent the suspension of the visa liberalization from taking place.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said Wednesday there were information that certain members of the EU, such as Belgium, had requested holding a discussion on a temporary suspension of the visa liberalization for Serbia in case the number of bogus asylum seekers continued to grow.
