Spokesperson of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Nerma Jelacic has stated that the Tribunal is ready to take over Serbian war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic upon the completion of the extradition proceedings in Serbia, adding that, in the phase prior to the extradition, medical examinations of Mladic will be carried out only by the Serbian doctors.
We are waiting for the completion of the proceedings in Belgrade, and the decision of the Serbian authorities on Mladic's extradition to the ICTY, Jelacic told Tanjug.
She explained that, upon his arrival to the ICTY, Mladic will be subjected to medical examination at the Scheveningen detention unit, and put in a prison cell.
After that, he should appear before the court to plead guilty or not guilty to the indictment, Jelacic stressed.
Regarding the daily regime that Mladic will be subjected to as a prisoner, Jelacic said that he will have his own private cell where he will spend most of his time, and that during the day he will have the opportunity to spend time in the shared premises, where he will be able to meet other prisoners from the same wing.
When asked with whom exactly will Mladic be in contact with, she said she could not specify, noting that the ICTY does not separate prisoners according to their national, religious or some other affiliation.
I cannot name any concrete names, Jelacic said commenting the question whether Mladic will, for example, have the opportunity to talk to Radovan Karadzic.
