The situation in Belgrade is calm after the Sunday incidents, when the police arrested 111 people, 37 of whom are minors, police chief Milorad Veljovic has stated.
"They are mostly young people and sports hooligans, who I suspect had no intention of supporting anyone, but simply wished to cause incidents and chaos," Veljovic told B92.
The police intervention took about 30 minutes, but it took a little longer than that to disperse all of the individual groups, he noted.
It is in the interest of the police to investigate the Sunday events and interview the arrested in order to see if they caused the incidents on their own or were incited to do it, Veljovic remarked.
"The police are in complete control of the situation in Belgrade and all of Serbia. They are capable of reacting when needed and in national interest," he stressed, adding that the timely intervention on Sunday prevented large scale damage to the city and serious incidents.
Todorovic: I expect riot initiators will be found
Serbian Radical Party (SRS) deputy leader Dragan Todorovic expects that the authorized services will determine who are the persons who caused disorder at the rally organized in support of ICTY indictee Ratko Mladic on Sunday evening.
I expect that perpetrators and initiators of the riot will be found, Todorovic told Tanjug, adding that those who caused disorder have nothing to do with the participants of the protest.
As he stressed, SRS had taken all measures for the rally in Belgrade to go by in accordance with the law.
