Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stated on Sunday evening that 111 people were arrested after clashing with the police during the Serbian Radical Party's protest against war crimes indictee Ratko Mladic's arrest, 17 of whom are believed to be members of 1389 Movement as they wore t-shirts with the organization's signs.
Dacic said that after fast and efficient police intervention, public peace and order was restored in Belgrade around 22 p.m., adding that six buildings and five police vehicles were damaged in the events. Dacic stated for the Radio and Television of Serbia that various police units dispersed the protestors, including the mounted unit.
He underlined that the riot was caused by several hundred extremists, adding that the police had to know a difference between those protestors who peacefully express their disagreement with a certain social phenomenon, and those who are there to violate public peace and order.
Dacic underscored that the police warned the organizers that certain extremists will not be able to be controlled, which the organizers agreed with during the rally.
“I do not blame the organizers, but they were aware that it is likely that extreme groups will appear at the rally,” he said.
Dacic said that the SRS rally gathered 15,000 people, and that the organizers called on the gathered participants not to cause disorder and to disperse in peace, but certain extremist groups started rioting and were later neutralized by the police.
