Spokesperson of the ICTY Nerma Jelacic told that everything in the ICTY was ready for the extradition of war crimes indictee Ratko Mladic and all that was needed was Serbia's decision to go through with it.
She noted that Mladic would be examined by a doctor as soon as he was in ICTY custody, which would be followed by an official statement about his condition.
Two to three days after that, Mladic will make his first appearance in court, said Jelacic. Everything has been ready for Mladic's arrival since last week, Jelacic stated, adding that the extradition will involve additional security measures.
On arrival, Mladic will first be informed about his rights, and there is also a possibility for him to be separated from the other inmates during the first day.
The warden could choose to keep him separate for the first 24 hours in order to allow him to get used to the new surroundings, Jelacic pointed out. But that cannot last for more than a day, and he will be transferred afterwards to one of the three wings currently holding inmates, she added.
There are 36 prisoners in ICTY detention. Jelacic said that Mladic could be kept separate from Karadzic if that was requested by one of the sides during the trial.
The two men's indictments are the same and there are indications that their trials could be merged.
The inmates do not spend the whole day in their cell, but are together from early morning until late in the evening, Jelacic remarked. She said she could not specify the wing where Mladic would be placed.
