Head of the Serbian government office for cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Dusan Ignjatovic stated on Sunday that Serbia has the political will to see its cooperation with the ICTY reach its conclusion and for the last ICTY indictee Goran Hadzic to be arrested.
No one can deny the existence of political will for Serbia to complete its cooperation with the ICTY successfully, nor the operative efforts to maintain the cooperation at a high level, Ignjatovic told Tanjug.
He expressed strong belief that the remaining ICTY fugitive Goran Hadzic would be brought to justice immediately if authorities locate him in Serbia. Ignjatovic also noted that he would not like to comment on the speech ICTY Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz is due to deliver before the UN Security Council on Monday.
We have agreed with all the assessments Brammertz included in his report with regard to Serbia's cooperation with the ICTY, save for the statements he made regarding the search for fugitives, Ignjatovic said and added that an indubitably important thing is that Mladic has been arrested in the meantime, which contributed to overcoming Serbia's disagreement with the ICTY prosecutor.
He noted that Serbia is fully cooperating with the ICTY and recalled that Serbia has so far delivered to The Hague 45 out of 46 indictees whose extradition the ICTY requested.
The authorities in Serbia have achieved a very high level of cooperation with the ICTY and its residual mechanism which will continue to perform the Tribunal's job after the ICTY mandate ends, Ignjatovic said.
According to him, cooperation with the ICTY is one of the conditions for Serbia's further European integration and the fact that Serbia and the Tribunal have uninterrupted cooperation will certainly have a positive effect on the country's further integration.
He noted that there is no reason for him to change the critical report although it has to be said that by arresting Mladic, Serbia has fulfilled one of its main international obligations, which would certainly be presented to the UNSC in the positive light.
As a result of this arrest, only one of the 161 indictees remains ar large today, he said.
Brammertz's special advisor Frederick Swinnen told Tanjug Sunday answering a question whether Brammertz will confirm Monday that Serbia cooperates fully with ICTY that one must wait for the oral report, in which Brammertz will certainely mention the remaining fugitive Goran Hadzic.
