Serbian President Boris Tadic said Monday that the bridge near Ada Ciganlija river island was not only a bridge in Belgrade but one that had a regional imortance and would solve the problem of the region's most complex traffic point - Belgrade.

Serbian President Boris Tadic said Monday that the bridge near Ada Ciganlija river island was not only a bridge in Belgrade but one that had a regional imortance and would solve the problem of the region's most complex traffic point - Belgrade.

After the bridge was joined up with the erection of the last steel segment of the main section on Monday, Tadic told a press conference the moment was a huge one for Serbia, its citizens and the entire region.

“This is a huge construction and economic endeavor and citizens of Serbia should be proud,” the Serbian president said.

Tadic said that it was appropriate for Serbia to build bridges that represented engineering and scientific challenges as that was the role and mission of Serbia and its builders.

“When I first came to see this bridge, at the start of its construction, I talked to German and Austrian engineers who told me that we could be proud of the people who build our bridges,” said Tadic.

He stressed that all other bridges on the Sava and Danube rivers had each in its time beat a world record of a sort, the new bridge near Ada being no exception.

Tadic recommended that the bridge at Ada be named after assassinated prime minister Zoran Djindjic and late mayor of Belgrade Nenad Bogdanovic.

“Somehow I associate this bridge with Nenad and Zoran and I would be happiest if its name was 'Nenad and Zoran's Bridge'. I have put the proposal and we should now ask the citizens what they think about it,” Tadic said.

Tadic said that despite the difficult times, Serbia was nearing the completion of the bridge on the Danube river near Beska (Vojvodina), the Belgrade road bypass and Corridor 10 and was beginning the works on the bridge connecting Belgrade's neighborhoods Zemun and Borca and on other infrastructure facilities.

Tadic said that the main routes should be completed in 2013 and that he hoped that works on the motorway sections from Pojate to Preljina, from Preljina to Belgrade, and toward Pozega, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina would begin at about that time.

He said that all that, together with the completion of several power plants, would be the foundation for Serbia's development until 2020.
