Spanish Ambassador in Belgrade Inigo de Palacio Espana said the guiding idea in the talks about Kosovo has to be the establishment of lasting peace in the region.
In order to achieve that, it is of utmost importance to fully consider the interests of the people in Kosovo, Espana said in an interview for Belgrade's daily Politika.
He said that new parametres should be sought in the talks on Kosovo, and voiced his expectation that the discussion would be organised as soon as possible and that it would yield a final solution.
What matters is the political message, and this message reads: Serbia has its legitimate interests for its people in Kosovo. Sooner or later, the two sides will have to find a model which would protect those interests, the Spanish ambassador underlined.
Asked if Serbia could get the EU candidacy status without an accord within the Union on the country's geographical borders, Espana answered that Serbia's border lines are defined by the Serbian Constitution, which the EU takes into consideration, provided that its five member-countries does not recognise Kosovo (independence).
Espana said that as a representative of Spain, he can say that provided Serbia gets a positive opinion on October 12, Spain will do its best so that Serbia acquires the status of candidacy in December.
The European Commission should make a cool-headed, objective evaluation of the huge job Serbia has done since last year's report in adjusting itself to the required standards, principles and recommendations, Espana said.
