Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic said today that the company PTT Srbija is an example of a company that, thanks to a skillful business policy, managed to generate profit in a liberalised market, and noted that PTT finances its investment from domestic sources.
Cvetkovic said at a ceremony marking the completion of construction work of the main postal centre in Belgrade that this project is strategic, as it will serve as a hub, "the heart of the postal system," noting that it will, in coordination with those in Novi Sad and Nis, enable automatic classification of shipments for all of Serbia.
He commended PTT Srbija for caring about balanced regional development and for engaging local companies.
This company has a good business vision, Cvetkovic said, adding that the introduction of automated classification of shipments will give full support to modernisation of the public sector.
The Prime Minister recalled that when the corner stone for the main postal centre “Belgrade” was laid on 24 December 2010, the Serbian government and PTT Srbija planned to finish construction works by this spring, which means that today’s ceremony is a proof that this plan has been fulfilled.
Director of PTT Srbija Goran Ciric said that the construction of the Belgrade centre on the area of 28,000 square metres is a first precondition for the postal service to move from the classification of shipments in the way it was done in the 19th century directly to the one from the 21st century applying high standards.
The main postal centre “Belgrade” is located in Zemun, near Corridor 10 and it covers 5.6 hectares of the former military facility that was bombed in 1999.
PTT Srbija invested €40 million in the construction of this centre and reconstruction of 2,200 square metres and building of another 2,3000 square metres of offices in Novi Sad and reconstruction of 4,800 square metres in Nis.
