National Bank of Serbia governor Miodrag Soskic denied rumors on May 24 of a collapse of the dinar. He stressed that a new government needed to be voted in as quickly as possible, to continue reforms.

"No, this is not a collapse - this was four months during which there was a 10 percent drop [in the value of the dinar]. The dinar's drop is not unusual for the currency regime that we are in. This is a normal incentive for the currency regime that we are in," Soskic replied when asked to comment on the weakening of the dinar against the euro, which now trades for 115 dinars.

Soskic said that at a meeting with president-elect Tomislav Nikolic, he had urged for the creation of a new government as soon as possible.

"I wanted to tell the president about the central bank's view of the economic situation in the country. He validated our arguments. At this time, prolonging the formation of a cabinet is something that is not desirable," Soskic said.

The central bank governor said that Serbia would have to balance its revenues and expenditures, which he said would necessitate either tax reforms or improving tax collection, plus reducing the grey economy and employing a penny-wise spending policy.
