An estimated 30 to 50 thousand London students and lecturers have collided with police during protests against plans to increase tuition fees and cut university funding in England, BBC reported.

The protesters broke in the Conservative Party headquarters and set placards and banners on fire.

The BBC reporter said protesters on the roof had thrown liquids down and a female police officer had been injured.

A week ago new British coalition government announced a plan to treble tuition fees in England. Ministers of the new government explained that the new system would be fairer than the present one, offering more help to the poorest students.
