American federal authorities arrested in the northeastern USA 127 people suspected of organized crime, murders, extortion and other offences, in one of the biggest Mafia takedowns in the history of FBI.

More than 800 federal agents and police officers participated in arresting mobsters in New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, their main target being members of five New York mob families and a clan in New Jersey.

The arrested are facing charges including murder, extortion, narcotics trafficking, illegal gambling, arsoning, collecting debts, and other crimes, US Attorney General Eric Holder said at a press conference in New York, AP reported.

According to Holder, Thursday action was one of the biggest one-day FBI operations against Mafia members.

He assessed that members and associates of La Cosa Nostra are among the most dangerous criminals in the USA.

Two former police officers are among the arrested.

Head of the FBI's New York office Janice Fedarcyk said that during the investigation many turncoats helped the agents, which shows that the vow of silence known as the omerta is more myth than reality today.
