Turkey has raised the special consumer tax on a number of goods such as alcohol, cigarettes, mobile phones and automobiles with engines of more than 1.6 litres, with a view to slow down the rate of foreign imports.

In this way, the Turkish cabinet is trying to cope with the trade deficit that is expected to reach 9.4 per cent from the GDP this year before it could drop to 8 per cent next year.
