The aid programme aims to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community. Since 2006, its budget totalled €292 million, with a further €28 million foreseen for 2012.
European Commission adopted its Annual Reports on EU assistance to the Turkish Cypriot community and on the implementation of the Green Line Regulation on 1 June.
Despite operating in a unique political and legal environment, the aid programme has brought tangible benefits to the Turkish Cypriots. It has also been a catalyst in bringing the Turkish Cypriot community closer to the EU.
The European Commission is committed to continue this work that makes a difference in the daily lives of Turkish Cypriots and helps prepare for the reunification of the island.
The Green Line Regulation continues to provide a workable basis for allowing the passage of persons and goods to and from the government-controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus.
