The Balkans are experiencing a period of stronger seismic activity and the possibility of a bigger than normal earthquake hitting the region should not be excluded, the directors of the seismology institutes of Serbia and Montenegro warned.
The Director of Montenegro’s seismology institute, Branislav Glavatovic, said that seismic activity has been on the rise following a quiet period of some 15 to 20 years, particularly along the Adriatic coast in Albania, Montenegro and Italy.
Slavica Radovanovic, the director of Serbia’s seismology institute, said that tsunamis were possible in the Mediterranean, but that no high waves should be expected because the sea is shallow, the coast is steep and earthquakes are weaker than 7 on the Richter scale.
