A total of 134 people have been diagnosed with the West Nile virus up to date, Radio Athens reported.

Few days ago Greek Foreign Minister Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou said there was no reason for concern as the authorities were ready to fight against West Nile virus, which has killed four elderly people since the beginning of the month.

The virus, transmitted through bites by infected mosquitoes, has so far affected populations in Northern Greece, in a zone stretching from Larissa to the northern city of Thessaloniki, in close proximity to lakes and rivers.

The health ministry has ordered that efforts to spread insecticides in the region be intensified, targeting areas where contamination is highest.
