Skiing, hiking and alpinism tradition in our region has existed for over a hundred years, and there are many documents and objects, but the expansions of winter tourism came after the XIV Olympic Games in held in 1984 in Sarajevo.
Tourists and especially skiers say that you can find everything in Bosnia and Herzegovina: the perfect ski slopes of Jahorina, the best alpine skiing track on Bjelasnica, and the massive, tall and absolutely tame and open Vlasic, and harsh Kupres, and colorful Igman, as well as the amazing nature park of Blidinje.
The Olympic Mountains Jahorina, Bjalasnica, Igman, Trebevic and Vlasic, the recreation centers of Risovac and Kupres, and ski resorts on Kozara, Busovaca, Ostrelj, Vlasenica, Vranica, Borje and others, offer more then 60 kilometers of ski tracks connected with 10 cableways and 26 ski lifts and can serve over 20,000 skiers per hour.
The mountain centers are at an altitude of 800 to 1800 meters and are ideal for development of winter, sports, recreation, hunting and fishing tourism. Add to this the traditional local hospitality of the population and their dedication to development of healthy organic foods.
The accommodation capacities on the mountains are divided between hotels, apartment suites, pensions, mountain homes and motels which offer more then 12000 beds and, according to unofficial information, over 250,000 overnights were recorded during the past year. If you add to this number, the large percentage of unrecorded overnights, the final number is much bigger.
The big advantage of ski centers in BiH is that they are situated near large cities such as Sarajevo, Mostar or Banja Luka, which are situated on main airway, railway or road intersections and offer a variety of accommodation capacities, and provide diverse cultural and entertainment contents for tourists.
When we talk about winter tourism, Bosnia and Herzegovina undoubtedly has the largest comparative advantages compared to other countries in the region. In that advantage lays the development chance of our country, which with investments, can bring to creation of modern mountain centers with diverse and quality tourist offers, which could fulfill the needs of the most demanding tourists.
