Victor Friedman claims to be an objective scholar... yet accepts awards from extremists in the current FYROM government that now portray themselves as direct descendants of ancient Macedonians? Surely Mr. Friedman knows by now that the majority of people that used to live in FYROM used to freely self-identify as ethnic Bulgarians. Surely he knows the current FYROM government even today oppresses evidence of it ethnic Bulgarian roots. Victor also seems to have forgotten what the FYROM government used to claim about their identity only a few years ago.

'We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great.'
(FYROM'S Ambassador Ljubica Acevshka in speech to US representatives in Washington on January 22 1999)

'We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian.'(FYROM´s Ambassador to Canada Gyordan Veselinov in interview to Ottawa Citizen Newspaper 24 February 1999)

"We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... We are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Kiro Gligorov, FYROM's first President)

Sadly Victor is living proof that prejudice can be found the halls of academia as well. Its especially sad that he manipulates the terms "human rights" to hide his prejudices.

Greek commentator, who habitually use ready-made pamphlet's answers, will not distinguish between the statements delivered by historians from those supplied by politicians. Moreover, the "samness" of their comments is symptomatic of a deeper psychological insecurities imbued in their elementary school indoctrination to follow and never question their own historiographers who have changed their national-building benchmarks numerous times before. They wouldn't dare reveal to their own children - who dwell in a mythical la-la land - that the western phillhellenes created, organized and ran their own government and nation. They would not there disclose to their own children that their own nation was built by assimilating Vlach, Albanian Turkish and Macedonian populations. They would not reveal to their own children that 19 cent. historiographers in Greece claimed that ancient Macedonians were conquerors of Greece and that they were not considered brethren. They would not dare mentioning to their children that Greeks entered Macedonia for the first time in 1913 with the Balkan Wars and finally, they wouldn't dare revealing to their own children that, contrary to human right conventions, their government does not recognize minorities in Greece. Slowly and gradually the world recognizes you for what you truly are; a xenophobic, narcissistic, overblown liars and manipulators.
