Parliament Speaker Trajko Veljanoski signed Friday a decision calling early parliamentary elections, which will be held on June 5, and appealed all political factors to make efforts in a bid to enable fair and democratic elections.

Parliament Speaker Trajko Veljanoski signed Friday a decision calling early parliamentary elections, which will be held on June 5, and appealed all political factors to make efforts in a bid to enable fair and democratic elections.

Elections are being called after the Parliament was dissolved yesterday, thus ending the mandate of current MPs, who were also elected in snap polls on 1 June 2008.

"On Thursday, the Parliament decided that the legitimacy of parliamentary political factors should be reviewed by the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia at snap parliamentary polls. I call on all political parties to bear accountability in ensuring conditions for holding fair and democratic elections," Veljanoski said after signing the decision.

"Political parties are expected to provide as bigger endorsement as possible for their positions. But, at the same time, every political party in this coming period has the chance and obligation to be committed to creating constructive atmosphere and strengthening mutual trust," he stated.

The Speaker called for responsible and dignified behaviour, urging members and supporters of political parties to take country's interests into account.

"The citizens give the final assessment of the proposed political programs. Hence, I call on the citizens to vote in the early elections and decide to whom to give their trust and mandate for governing the Republic of Macedonia in the future," Veljanoski noted.

The June 5 polls are the second early elections. Seven parliamentary polls have been held since Macedonia declared independence. They were held in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2008.
