Croatian food giant Agrokor Group has offered two billion Euros for the purchase of Slovenian retail chain, Mercator.

Croatian food giant Agrokor Group has offered two billion Euros for the purchase of Slovenian retail chain, Mercator.

Agrokor is ready to dish out more than 800 Euros for the purchase itself, while the total costs – which include settling Mercator’s debts – are estimated at two billion Euros.

This is Agrokor’s fourth attempt to buy the Slovenian retailer. All previous offers have been blocked by Slovenian politicians, reluctant to hand over the company into the hands of its biggest regional competitor.

Slovenian politicians continue to be against the sale to Agrokor, who they say will reduce Slovenian products from Mercator’s shelves in favour of Croatian brands.

Should Agrokor take over Mercator, it would become a regional retail giant with 60,000 employees and more than 2,500 stores, daily Jutarnji List writes.
