An alleged Italian mafia boss and his son, who were recently arrested in the Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik after being on Interpol's international wanted list, will spend the next 40 days in custody in Bilice jail in Split.

Antonio Melato (56) and his son Alessandro (26), were arrested on suspicion of international drug smuggling and money laundering. The pair have been living in Croatia for some time now, and the older Melato is allegedly one of the leading chiefs of the Calabrian mafia organisation that is considered even more dangerous, more powerful and more brutal than the notorious Sicilian Cosa Nostra. The father and son were arrested near Dubrovnik airport.

According to unofficial information, arrest warrants were out for the pair after an international drug trafficking ring in Spain was smashed, and among those arrested was another son of Melato. Italy now needs to send a request for their extradition, reports Vecernji list.
