Islamic Community in Serbia Chief Mufti Muamer Zukorlic said that the autonomy of Sandzak would be an "inevitable social process" and that for the sake of the stability of Serbia and Montenegro it was necessary to start a dialogue "on time."

Islamic Community in Serbia Chief Mufti Muamer Zukorlic said that the autonomy of Sandzak would be an "inevitable social process" and that for the sake of the stability of Serbia and Montenegro it was necessary to start a dialogue "on time."

For the Podgorica daily Vijesti, Zukorlic explained the request for an autonomous Sandzak as the need of Bosniaks to have "additional protective mechanisms" in that region in order to redefine the status of Bosniaks in the Balkans," with the involvement of the state on whose territory they live, the EU and the international community.

Zukorlic thinks there "must be a historical dialogue," whose "main driving forces" would be Bosniaks and Serbs. He also said that "it would be easier" to lead a discussion with the Montenegrins because there were "fewer factors burdening relations."

Zukorlic said that the most applicable model of autonomy for Sandzak was the South Tyrol model because there was crossborder, that is, dual autonomy, and neither the identity of Italy nor Austria was threatened.

The Islamic Community in Serbia mufti also said that "nobody representing the need for the Sandzak to have a special status supported radical measures or violence," but he warned that "anything could be expected, especially if someone has the idea to silence those who speak of autonomy through division and beatings."
