The Serbian government decided to suspend the compulsory military service obligation and, as of January 1, 2011, military service will be only for those who want to take part in it on a voluntary basis.

The government decided to suspend the military service obligation and sent the decision to the parliament for adoption, it was announced after the government's Thursday session.

The military conscription in the Serbian Armed Forces will be abolished after the last party of recruits for 2010 completes the mandatory service, the release says.

The release adds that the same applies to the recruits who opted for a civilian service alternative.
