A poll official of Bosnian Muslim origin was shot dead Wednesday in Kosovo's ethnically tense north ahead of weekend elections. The European Union's special envoy to Kosovo and the head of the EU mission in Kosovo EULEX condemned the violence and called for a peaceful run-up to the elections.

One man was killed and another wounded in an attack that took place in the municipality of Leposavic, northern Kosovo-Metohija (KiM), around 2 p.m, both of them Bosniaks, KPS Regional Spokesperson Besim Hoti told Tanjug earlier on Wednesday.

Hoti stated that the two men were in a vehicle with KiM licence plates, when they were shot and that it is too early to discuss the motives and potential suspects in the case.

A poll official of Bosnian Muslim origin was shot dead Wednesday in Kosovo's ethnically tense north ahead of weekend elections, the first since independence, but the government vowed the ballot would go through.

"The government of the Republic of Kosovo believes that such criminal acts cannot affect the success of the December 12 elections in any way," the government said in a statement.

Unknown assailants "opened fire on the car" carrying the victim and another man were driving in a suburb of the city of Leposavic, according to a police statement.

The other occupant of the car was badly wounded in the shoot-out.

There was no indication that the attack, just days ahead of Kosovo's first elections since it declared independence three years, ago was linked to the vote, the authorities said.

However, the dead man was identified as Sefko Salkovic, a political leader of the minority Bosniak community who worked with Kosovo's ethnic Albanian-dominated authorities. He was part of a team in charge of organising the weekend poll in the region.

Some 35,000 members of the Bosniak community live in Kosovo

The European Union's special envoy to Kosovo and the head of the EU mission in Kosovo EULEX condemned the violence and called for a peaceful run-up to the elections.

"Violence has no place in democracy," EU envoy Pieter Feith said.

"I urge calm and call for responsible behavior from all sides in this potentially sensitive period," EULEX head of mission French Xavier Bout de Marnhac, said in a separate statement.

In connection to yesterday’s fatal incident in the village of Postenje, EULEX Head of Mission, Xavier Bout de Marnhac, made the following statement:

“I strongly condemn today’s fatal shooting incident in the village of Postenje where one individual was killed and another one was wounded. I urge for calm and call for responsible behavior from all sides in this potentially sensitive period. The use of violence is entirely unacceptable. EULEX is supporting the Kosovo Police in establishing the facts of this attack as well as finding and bringing to justice the perpetrator/s. Kosovo Police is in charge of law and order in the area, monitored, mentored and advised by EULEX.

I have full confidence that Kosovo Police will carry out their tasks satisfactory in relation to this investigation. EULEX is fully prepared to support Kosovo Police in their work and to deal with any eventualities.”
