This year, the event is being held under the slogan 'A city is built with the heart - Belgrade to Kraljevo', and
visitors who purchase yellow paper hats will help raise funds to assist repairing the damages in the city of
Kraljevo in central Serbia, which was recently hit by a powerful earthquake.

A humanitarian event entitled 'Open Heart Street', which is a traditional gathering in downtown Belgrade that represents a continuation of the New Year celebration, began at noon on the first day of the New Year.

Thousands of citizens gathered in Svetogorska and nearby streets, to witness an exciting event in which well-
known artists, clowns, jugglers, musicians, magicians and Santa Claus entertain children.

The event was conceived over three decades ago, when actors from the Theatre Atelier 212 in the Svetogorska Street turned their daily visits to the nearby bohemian tavern, 'Srpska Kafana', into an unusual January 1 event, by switching their roles as guests with the employees in the pub, in which way they tried to express their gratitude for the year-round efforts of the employees in serving them.

The word quickly spread around the city about this very cheerful gathering, and the tavern began to draw great
number of guests other than actors on the first day of January, so that, as the years passed, the public house
became to tight a space to accommodate all who wanted to take part in the event, which thus spontaneously spread to the entire Svetogorska Street - the street with an open heart.

The Open Heart Street event, which honors joy and humanity, was officially established between 1988 and 1989, and has entered the calendar of the most significant events in the capital.

Over the last few years, the Tourist Organization of Belgrade and Atelier 212 have taken over the organization
of the event under the auspices of the City.

The event is being attended by some 100,000 citizens of Belgrade and their guests.
