Leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Tomslav Nikolic intends to leave hospital on Sunday unless some health problems occur overnight, Ljubomir Ilic of the medical team in charge of Nikolic's health condition stated on Saturday.

“According to his own wish, Nikolic will stay in hospital until Sunday morning due to exhaustion and weakness, and would then leave the Belgrade Clinical Hospital Centre (KBC) in case no complications arise, so that he could spend our greatest holiday with his family,” Ilic told reporters.

According to him, Nikolic's health condition is good, consequences of the thirst strike have been completely made up for and he is taking in enough fluids, which means that there are no further indications for hospitalisation.

Nikolic was taken to the KBC on Sunday, having launched a hunger and thirst strike so as to force the government to call early elections.

Ilic said that Nikolic wants to continue his hunger strike, which does not constitute a jeopardy to his vital functions for now, but the first consequences of this decision could become manifest in a week. However, the doctor noted that Nikolic's life could become seriously endangered if he continues his hunger strike for another month.
